What are Advantages of Data Visualization?

Data visualization. The word that is increasingly more spoken of, but I have a very feeling that many people do not have the real definition or real feeling as to what data visualization actually is. Or, just what it must be. First I'll try to clarify what it is, and just then am i allowed to consider what the direct advantages of meaningful data visualization are.- data visualization designer

Even though some activities that may be viewed as data visualizations are incredibly old, most development has happened yesteryear 30-40 years. For the reason that period, from your first organized papers of John Tukey or Edward Tufte, I have faith that many scientists and later on IT professionals felt like I felt when first shown such literature. The dominant feeling was that everything fell into place i asked myself how could I make countless mistakes within my career connected to building reports, graphs etc.

Well, i feel that the largest mistakes in data visualization are made because those do not the necessary level of focus on it; they are certain that they understand what they are doing. Even on commercials from top BI vendors, it's possible to see glossy dashboards full of colors, 3D bar graphs and 3D transparent pie charts. To the untrained eye that appears great, but that's the main with the problem - a couple of seconds 'looks' great. However it is informative? A great deal of colors for encoding visual information brings about visual noise; on 3D bar graphs you can not read measures correctly, and if you're assigned a 3D transparent pie-chart, just pick any two slices and try to think about which slice is bigger and by how much?

I hope that now you agree that there is a lot more to visual presentation of quantities then in order to click a 'convert to graph' button in some application. Whenever we consult fields of psychology, human visual systems and cognition or gestlt principles of visual perception, we become conscious that data visualization is a thing that you will find done correctly and, even more importantly, it could be learned and taught. Let's emphasize just one example. There's well-known initial phase of visual perception that develops very fast beneath the degree of consciousness called preattentive processing. It enables every man to become able to detecting a certain pair of visual attributes at great speed. The initial example that springs under consideration is the very text you read. If I ask you to count how frequently did the term 'visual' occur in this text, you'll need no less than 10 or 20 seconds to have an answer. But, if every word 'visual' can be found in bold style and colored red, recognition is going to be almost instantaneous. That'll be because difference in color will likely be preattentively perceived. Other such categories include - for example - position, orientation, size or shape differences.

Each data visualization designer is aware of such simple principles, he can apply them to any report or graph, data analysis or information dashboard. Only then does it give a powerful way to understand data. When done efficiently, data visualization can make us think, compare data, read stories away from our data, will put data from the right context and eventually help decision-makers to really make the right decisions.

Perceptive Analytics specializes in creating custom data visualizations. Conveying meaning in data quickly is the focal point of analytics.
